Where is the Physiotherapy Department located at MDH and how can it be reached?

The Physiotherapy Department is located on the ground floor, along the south corridor just beyond the Hospital Chapel. It shares reception and waiting room facilities with the Occupational Therapy and Speech and Language Therapy Departments.

What does the Physiotherapy Department do?

The Physiotherapy Department at MDH provides services to inpatients at Mater Dei Hospital, outpatient services to a small group of patients and a staff treatment service. It also acts as a reception point for patients who are referred from outpatient consultant clinics and the Accident and Emergency department. It works in close collaboration with outpatient services based at the Rehabilitation Hospital Karin Grech and all the other physiotherapy and therapy departments in the various hospitals and Health Centre clinics.

Inpatient services

The physiotherapy services to the inpatient wards are organised on the basis of clinical teams. The teams provide a service to all the wards at MDH and are identified as follows:

  • Critical care and cardiac services team
  • Surgical team
  • Medical team
  • Paediatric team
  • Orthopaedic team Neurosciences team

7 day week after hours and on-call service

Referral of inpatients for physiotherapy is a collaborative procedure between medical, nursing and physiotherapy staff. Physiotherapists provide treatment during the acute phase of a patient’s stay in hospital. Early rehabilitation to facilitate discharge home or to prepare for further rehabilitation in an inpatient or outpatient setting is an important role carried out by physiotherapists at MDH.

Outpatient services

Inpatients requiring follow-up on an outpatient basis may be seen at MDH. However, the majority are referred to the Outpatient Physiotherapy Department at the St. Luke’s Hospital for continuation of their treatment programme.

Out-patient services at MDH include:

  • Cardiac Rehabilitation
  • Hand Therapy
  • Women and men’s health physiotherapy
  • Paediatric Physiotherapy which includes patients referred for orthopaedic and respiratory conditions. Children with development and long-term conditions are treated at the Paediatric
  • Physiotherapy Department located at CDAU (Pieta’)
  • Pulmonary Rehabilitation
  • Physiotherapy service for staff members
  • Respiratory Physiotherapy
  • Staff Treatment service
  • A&E Physiotherapy
  • Vestibular Physiotherapy

Other Services

  • Moving and handling training
  • Exercise testing and exercise prescription within the weight management program for staff

Who can make use of the services?

Referral for in-patients and out-patients is through a request by medical staff. Physiotherapy treatment is always preceded by a thorough assessment to establish patient needs and plan an individualised treatment programme.
